It was a shorter travel day today as we planned to only go as far to Reno,NV… A good four hours under our usual twelve hour drives. It was an easy drive out of SLC as the salt lake beds were a straight shot, mile after mile of white flat lands.
The Nevada drive consisted mostly of up and down sections… Climbing up a mountain side only to decend it, drive through a straight area and then climb again.
We arrived in Reno in the early afternoon and decided to treat ourselves with a room at a casino hotel, the El Dorado to be exact.
Tomorrow marks our final stretch as we’re only four hours from our final destination! San Fran here we come!

Today made for an interesting day as we left Nebraska behind and headed into the Wyoming highlands. The high head winds and the steep uphill inclines made the car struggle, but slow and steadily we made it up each hill.
While Wyoming had it’s challenges, I found the steep and curvey down hill roads leading into Salt Lake City more nerve racking. There’s nothing like driving down 6 degree declines while tractor trailers barrell down behind you.
We also gave up our search for a campsite… after a long day of driving, the last thing we wanted to do was mess around with a tent.

Today was a long day as we drove out of Indiana, crossed the northern part of Illinois and then coasted through the oh so exciting plains of Iowa and Nebraska.
Currently we’re shacked up in Motel 6 again as our attempt to camp out failed when the campsite we chose off the map ended up being no more than a gravel loop with a few fire pits and picknick tables.
Tomorrow we hope to make it to Salt Lake City. Camping TBD.

After 12 hours and almost 800 miles I’m glad to say we’ve arrived in Gary, Indiana. It isn’t as far as we were hoping to get on day one, but that’s OK. I guess camping out will just have to wait… Maybe tomorrow.

George and I are heading out west to San Francisco this morning. The car is all packed, well stuffed, and I’m just making some last second rounds to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything.

I’m going to try my best to make some updates through out the journey… some by my cell phone and hopefully some through any wi-fi hotspots we find along the way. So keep an eye out those.
